Master Jan
van der Schee started training in the art of
Tae Kwondo in 1971 at the age of 17. The
only martial arts heard of at that time in
Holland were Boxing, Judo, Ju Jitsu and
Karate. It was a whole new world to explore.
Tae Kwondo at that time was
still quite similar to Tang Soo Do. They
even performed Hyung's. This was logical
because different Tang Soo Do teachers were
teaching Tae Kwondo. The style he practiced
was Tae Kwondo Moo Duk Kwan taught by Kwan
Jang Nim Theo P. Salm. In 1978, Master van
der Schee began teaching.
Due to some
difficulties in 1979 between some Do Jangs
and the Dutch Tae Kwondo Association, a
Black Belt meeting was held under the
leadership of Kwan Jang Nim Salm and Sa Bom
Nim Putte where they decided to break with
Tae Kwondo and go back to the basics - Tang
Soo Do Moo Duk Kwan. This was the start for
Tang Soo Do in the Netherlands.
With the switch to Tang Soo
Do, all instructors had to take training
courses from different Masters and
Grandmasters. Master van der Schee was
taught in Belgium by Master Beom Jhoo Lee
(teacher of Jean-Claude van Damme). He also
traveled many times to England where he was
instructed by Kwan Jang Nim Kang Uk Lee and
from where he received his 4th Dan.
He has also had instruction
from Kwan Jang Nims Hwang Kee and his son H.
C. Hwang. Some other instructors he trained
with were Kwan Jang Nims Richard Byrne,
Dominic Giacobbe, Benedetto Stumpf and many
more. In 2010 in Cardiff, Wales, he received
his 7th Dan from Grandmaster Richard Byrne
for his work in Tang Soo Do.
Master van
der Schee is always busy giving instruction
in Tang Soo Do and he also provides
management training with Tang Soo Do as
basic. Every year he organizes the Annual
Beach training in the Netherlands, which is
one of most loved events of the year.
Sa Bom
Nim van der Schee is Chairman and Co-founder
of the
All Tang Soo Do Organization,
Netherlands, which is a non-profit
organization that strives for more
cooperation between other Tang Soo Do
organizations. He is also Chairman of the
Dutch branch of the United Tang Soo Do
Congress under Grandmaster Richard Byrne.
