The Karate Center's 10th Annual
Karate Camp
by Master Gary Horner - 5th Dan
The Karate Center, Lake Worth, Florida
November 18 through
the 20th, 2011, marked our 10 year anniversary for
our martial arts weekend retreat. This year we
hosted over 50 participants, Gup, Dan and Masters,
and made this year a successful, exciting and
rewarding weekend. Students from Karate Center Lake
Worth, Boynton Beach and Cape Coral Dojangs were
present.
Hosted by Master Gary
Horner and Master Bobbie Horner of the Karate
Center, students were busy all weekend with
workshops in staff, archery, nunchukas, breaking,
Tang Soo Do fundamentals and pad kicking drills.
Master Kevin Case, Yuk Dan, Master Gary
Horner, Oh Dan, Ms. Chris Narin, Sam Dan,
Mr. Tony Cabrera, E Dan, and Mr. Peter Elias,
E Dan conducted classes, keeping the students
busy and excited as they participated in a martial
arts warrior weekend retreat.
The goal of our camp
is to provide a safe, fun weekend of martial arts
training for all students, white belt through Black
Belt, ages 6 years old to adult. This goal was
accomplished as all the participants had a great
time learning, and experiencing new aspects of our
traditional curriculum. As their Instructor, my goal
was to engage the students in a working model of
teamwork and leadership exercise throughout the
event, exercising their potential like skills as
Black Belt leaders.
Teams were defined,
team leaders were assigned and their task was
presented Friday evening. Each team was challenged
with the task of creating a demonstration to be
performed Sunday morning and the end of camp for all
of participants, their parents and families. The
rules were simple. All team members must
participate, including chaperones. Team leaders and
their assistants were responsible to organize
practice sessions during 'free" time throughout the
weekend. The team leaders did a great job organizing
their teams and keeping them motivated and focused
on the task.
The demonstrations
were performed Sunday after breakfast with great
enthusiasm and pride. The other teams cheered as
there fellow martial artists performed. Their
parents cheered and were surprised at their
creativity and new found abilities.
Our Camp is not just
about physical training. It is about building
character and exercising life skills like team work
and leadership, as well as responsibility,
brotherhood and camaraderie as being a martial
artist.
