Contributed by
Master Gary Horner, The Karate Center, Lake Worth,
Florida
This year over 70 Tang Soo Do practitioners,
including color belts, Black Belts and Master
Instructors attended the Karate Centers’ 8th
Annual Karate Camp.
The late November
weather was perfect in south Florida -sunny and
warm. For many, this was their first camp and for
others it was their 5th, 6th
of even 8th camp. Five schools were
represented this year, the Karate Center, Lake
Worth, FL. Karate Center, Cape Coral FL., Phillips
Karate, New Port Richie, FL., Case Martial Arts,
Edgewater NJ, and Master Cintron, Kick 4 Success,
Tampa, FL.
Friday evening the
weekend began with the promotion ceremony for seven
new Cho Dan’s, two E Dan’s and three Instructors.
After dinner and camp orientation Ms. Nairn and Dr.
Felker exercised all the students with advanced
kicking drills.
After early morning
exercise and stretching we had a hearty breakfast
and began the morning workshops; archery, sword,
staff, and breaking. Master Case led the Black Belts
and advanced students in a Headong Gumdo (sword)
class, Mr. Elias conducted the breaking class as
Master Gary Horner conducted a staff workshop for
gup members. The archery sessions were taught by
GCCC instructor Tracy.
After lunch the
students continued on the remaining three workshops;
sparring, Ju Jitsu, and combination pad drills.
Master Phillips conducted a sparring workshop and
Master Cintron’s Ju Jitsu class had the students
energized as they were introduced to new techniques.
Mr. Peritz and Mr. Cabrera's combinations and pad
drills class had all the students pushing their
limits.
After dinner, all the
Black Belts were treated to a session with Master
Case on self defense. Master Bobbie Horner conducted
a class for the gup members in one step and self
defense drills.
Sunday morning we
were all treated to the team demonstrations and the
Masters demonstrations. As we all packed up to go
home, the big question was “when is the next camp?”
The answer is November 2010.
