MAKING TANG SOO DO HISTORY!!
On
Friday, May 6, 2011, 150 Dutch travelers (of which
88 were competitors) made their way by car, bus and
plane to the
World Championship in Wales. We went on Thursday and
it took us 12 hours by bus.
The weekend started for us on
Friday morning. There was a special training for the
UTC 3rd Dans and up, taught by Kwan Jang
Nim Richard Byrne. Everybody got up early and was
brought by van to the Central Dojang in Treochry in
the Rhonda Valley, a beautiful part of Wales. The
Kwan Jang Nim taught the UTC Dan Il Soo Sik Deh Ryun
sets, learning the proper way to execute the
techniques. Just by manipulating an arm or pulse in
a certain way you can inflict more pain, so this was
a very informative training session where we learned
very much.
Saturday, May 7th
was the day it was all going to happen! The
Championships attracted 1,068 verified entries with
over 20 other entries on the day, making this
Championships one of the biggest and best supported
Tang Soo Do Events of all time.
Competitors came from different
organizations and there were 19 countries competing,
including the USA, Wales, England, Scotland,
Ireland, Netherlands, South Africa, Greece, Italy
and Poland. Early in the morning the National
Athletic Hall at Cardiff University filled with
competitors, judges and fans. The tournament was
hosted by Master John Trudgill and the Traditional
Tang Soo Do Federation.

Mayor of
Cardiff |
The day started with the
introduction from the Grandmasters, head instructors
and sponsors. The tournament was opened by the Mayor
of Cardiff. The Grandmasters in attendance were Kwan
Jang Nims Robert Cheezic, Richard Byrne, Domenick
Giacobbe and Frederick Scott. There were also many
Ko Dan Jas attending - over 60 Masters and very many
Black Belts.
On 20 fields (rings) the youth
started competing for the cups and medals. The
competitors could compete in five events. These were
Deh Ryun (sparring), Traditional Hyung, Non-Traditional
Hyung (Chil Sung / Yuk Rho), Weapon Hyung and Kyok
Pa (breaking). The judging went very well.
After the youth finished, the
adult competition began, followed by the Black Belts
and Masters. There were three Master divisions.
There was lots to see and to enjoy. It was a great
day to meet old and new friends. You felt like
you’re one of a big family, all Tang Soo Do
spirited.
A fascinating event was extreme
breaking, which the crowd really enjoyed. The
Masters broke different kinds of materials, from
wooden stakes, bricks and cast iron pump handles.
But it still wasn’t finished. After the extreme
breaking, there was still the team sparring and the
team hyung. The team hyung was beautiful to watch.
The judges had a difficult task to give away the
prizes.

Master John
Trudgill |
|
This day was well organized by
Master Trudgill and his team who did an unbelievable
job. They must have worked very hard to get the work
done. I read a message on Facebook that 4 people
worked 18 hours on 310 categories, which is amazing
and shows how dedicated these people are.
But Master
Trudgill's team wasn’t finished yet because on
Sunday morning they had to be present for the
Seminars in Penceod, Bridgend. There were more then
200 people who attended these seminars. The teachers
on this day were Kwan Jang Nim Byrne and Fredrick
Scott who taught sparring drills. Sa Bum Nim Penny
Mitchell taught knife hyung and double knife hyung,
and Master Marco Di Scipio taught self-defense. We
learned a lot this weekend.
If you were
there, if you took part, you did indeed make
history. It was great weekend which we will never
forget. We would like to thank all people who made
this weekend a success - Master Trudgill and crew!
See you all in
November in Amsterdam.
